Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra

Welcome to my personal site! I am a Professor of International Business and Strategy and the CEM Professor of Global Sustainability at the D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University.

I am a global strategy scholar interested in understanding how context affects value creation, especially in emerging markets. My research interests are centered on two topics: global strategic management and global sustainable governance, which I analyze using economics-based thinking. My publications appear in leading academic journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Research Policy, and Strategic Management Journal.

The quality of my research has been recognized by being elected a Fellow of the Academy of International Business and being awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. Additionally, I received a Silver Medal from Journal of International Business Studies, seven best paper awards from the Academy of Management and Academy of International Business, and a best dissertation award from the Academy of Management.

My teaching interests are global strategy and sustainability, which I have delivered at universities around the world. I also provide research-informed insights to firms, governments, and universities on internationalization and upgrading.

I was co-editor of Global Strategy Journal, serve as an editorial board member for Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, and Strategic Management Journal, and expert reviewer for the national science foundations of Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, South Africa, Switzerland, and the USA.

My leadership in professional associations includes being a member of the Executive Committee of the International Management Division of the Academy of Management and Representative-at-Large of the Global Strategy Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society. In recognition of my service, the Academy of International Business Latin America and the Caribbean Chapter created the Cuervo-Cazurra and Newburry Award, and I received four best reviewer awards from Journal of International Business Studies, one from Journal of International Management, and nine from academic conferences.

I was awarded a Ph.D. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, a Ph.D. in Business Economics from the University of Salamanca, Spain, and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, with specializations in finance and marketing, from Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.
